At Doodle Dandy Rescue, some volunteers find their way to us through a single moment — and before long, they become an essential part of the mission. For Randi Shelton, that journey began with one special dog and has come full circle in the most meaningful way.
Since joining DDR, Randi has become a dedicated advocate for every dog who enters our care, bringing heart, purpose, and a deep sense of responsibility to her role on the Intake team!
How Randi Joined the DDR Family
Randi began volunteering with Doodle Dandy Rescue in September, shortly after adopting her sweet boy, Cotton.
"I started volunteering with Doodle Dandy Rescue in September, shortly after adopting my sweet boy, Cotton, through DDR."
Her experience as an adopter inspired her to get involved in a bigger way.
"Before bringing Cottonworth home, I had applied for several dogs, and I was genuinely impressed by how thorough, thoughtful, and intentional the entire process was. It opened my eyes to how important it is not just to place a dog, but to make sure each one ends up in a home where they can truly thrive."
That admiration for the process quickly turned into action — and today, she’s making that same impact for other dogs.
What She Does (Roles & Impact)
Randi is a key member of the Intake team and now serves as Lead Intake for the Austin region — a role that feels especially meaningful to her.
"I joined the intake team soon after, and I was recently offered the role of Lead Intake for the Austin region — which feels especially meaningful since Cotton himself came from that very region. It’s funny how things come full circle."
In this role, Randi helps ensure that every dog entering DDR is set up for success from the very beginning — advocating for their needs and helping guide them into safe, supportive foster homes.
Her impact hasn’t gone unnoticed by her team:
"Randi has been a phenomenal member of the Intake team. She is such a pleasure to work with due to her positive spirit and ensuring that she is a voice for all the doodles coming into the rescue. Even though she is on the intake team, she helps foster placement out tremendously by being thorough!"
Why Rescue Matters to Her
For Randi, rescue is deeply personal and rooted in purpose.
"Being part of intake is incredibly rewarding because you know you’re advocating for each dog from the moment they enter the rescue. You’re helping ensure they’re safe, loved, and set up for a future where they can truly flourish."
She is driven by the opportunity to be a voice for dogs who cannot advocate for themselves.
What She Loves Most About DDR
"What I enjoy most about volunteering with DDR is the sense of purpose it gives me."
Randi thrives in an environment where she can make a meaningful impact while being surrounded by a strong, supportive team.
"I also can’t say enough about the incredible team of leaders, mentors, and advocates who support us. Their guidance, encouragement, and passion make all the difference."
Being part of a community that shares the same mission is something she values deeply.
A Rescue Memory That Stands Out
One moment that stands out to Randi is her very first experience fostering.
"One of my favorite rescue memories has to be my very first experience fostering. There have been so many wonderful moments since then, but that one stands out because of how much it taught me."
That experience shaped her understanding of what dogs truly need.
"I learned so much about what a dog truly needs to feel safe and supported, and how important it is to approach everything in a way that sets them up for success."
How Rescue Has Impacted Her
"Volunteering with DDR has taught me so much, but the most profound lesson is understanding the impact we can have on a dog’s life."
Through her work, Randi has seen firsthand how powerful rescue can be.
"Not every situation is the same, but there are times when we truly are helping save a dog — giving them safety, stability, and a chance they might not have had otherwise."
That purpose continues to fuel her passion and commitment to the mission.
Life Outside of Rescue
Randi’s life is full of love, faith, and family.
"I love Jesus first and foremost. I’m happily married to my best friend of 17 years."
Her journey with dogs started later in life — but made an immediate impact.
"Believe it or not, I didn’t get my first dog until I was 43 — and now I can’t imagine life without one."
She describes herself as someone who thrives in a fast-paced, ever-learning environment.
"I’m absolutely the person who replies to emails immediately, and I thrive on learning new skills and managing a little chaos."
And while she’s deeply involved in rescue, she keeps a sense of humor about it all.
"I also cry over everything — happy tears, sad tears, you name it. And despite being deeply involved in rescue, I somehow do not have nearly enough dog photos on my phone."
A Moment That Makes Her Smile
One of Randi’s favorite ongoing “doodle moments” actually comes from her family.
"My family now sends me every doodle photo, video, or reel they come across — and I love it."
From texts asking “Is this a doodle?” to a steady stream of doodle videos from her mom, it’s become a joyful and meaningful part of her daily life.
Why We’re Grateful
Randi brings heart, dedication, and a true sense of purpose to Doodle Dandy Rescue. From her role in intake to her leadership in the Austin region, she ensures that every dog’s journey begins with care, advocacy, and intention.
Her positive spirit, attention to detail, and passion for helping dogs thrive make her an invaluable part of our rescue village. We are so grateful for everything she does to help our doodles find the lives they deserve!
