The holidays are magical—twinkling lights, delicious food, and enough wrapping paper to build a fort. But while you’re decking the halls, your dog is plotting… plotting how to eat, chew, or knock over every festive thing in sight. Let’s keep the season merry and safe with these laugh-out-loud but oh-so-important pup safety tips.
1. O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree… Please Don’t Fall on Me
Dogs think Christmas trees are indoor playgrounds. Anchor your tree like it’s preparing for a Texas tornado.
Bonus: skip the tinsel. It’s basically shiny spaghetti, and your pup will slurp it like Lady and the Tramp.
2. Chocolate is for Humans, Not Hounds
Those fancy truffles? Poison for pups. Keep candy bowls high enough that even the most determined dachshund can’t reach. If your friend places a special gift under the tree, make sure it’s not those chocolates she knows you love. Your Pup is sure to sniff them out!
3. Silent Night, Flameless Night
Candles + wagging tails = disaster movie. Go flameless or place candles somewhere only mountain goats could reach. Your pup doesn’t need a singed tail to learn about fire safety.
4. Gift Wrap = Pup Trap
Ribbon, bows, and tape are basically doggy chew toys in disguise. Keep wrapping supplies out of reach unless you want your pup to look like a DIY Pinterest fail.
Pro tip: give them their own “safe” present to shred—like a cardboard box stuffed with squeaky toys.
5. Turkey Temptations
Dogs believe turkey is their birthright. Bones, skin, and greasy drippings? Vet bills waiting to happen. Stick to plain bites of dog-safe veggies if you want them to join the feast without joining the ER.
6. Jingle Bells, Not Jingle Collars
Holiday music is great. Jingle-bell collars? Cute but annoying after hour three to you and your Pup. If you must accessorize, keep it comfy and safe—no choking hazards, no itchy sequins.
Remember: your pup is not a Christmas ornament (even if they look adorable under the tree).
7. All is Calm, All is Bright
Amid the chaos, give your pup a quiet retreat. A cozy bed away from the noise keeps them from turning into a stressed-out Grinch.
Bonus: fewer chances they’ll steal cookies off Santa’s plate.
Final Woof
Christmas is about joy, love, and not spending the holidays at the emergency vet. With a little planning (and a lot of humor), you can keep your pup safe while still letting them join in the festive fun. Because nothing says “holiday spirit” like a happy dog snoozing under the tree!
All of us at Doodle Dandy want to wish you and your family a safe and wonderful Holiday!
