At Doodle Dandy Rescue, not every hero is front and center — some are behind the scenes, making sure everything runs smoothly so our dogs can get where they need to be safely and successfully. Mikaela Elizondo is one of those incredible volunteers whose steady, thoughtful work helps power our mission every single day.
How Mikaela Joined the DDR Family
Mikaela began volunteering with Doodle Dandy Rescue in December 2025, bringing with her a lifelong love for rescue. "My own dog is a rescue, so animal rescue has always been close to my heart."
She was drawn to DDR for a very specific reason. "I joined DDR because I loved the idea of having a specific role and contributing to the behind-the-scenes work that keeps everything moving. The stray problem in Texas is heartbreaking. I know I can’t solve it alone, but I love being a small piece of the solution and helping however I can."
What She Does (Roles & Impact)
Mikaela plays a key role in supporting the Houston region through multiple areas, including:
Foster Placement Team
Transports
Supplies coordination
"I really enjoy being involved in the logistical side of things — helping make sure dogs get where they need to be and that fosters are set up for success."
Her work ensures that both dogs and fosters have what they need, when they need it — something that’s critical to the success of every placement.
Why Rescue Matters to Her
For Mikaela, rescue is about doing what you can, where you can. "I know I can’t solve it alone, but I love being a small piece of the solution."
That mindset is what makes her such an important part of the rescue — showing up consistently and making a real impact behind the scenes.
What She Loves Most About DDR
"What I enjoy most about volunteering with DDR is the people. I’ve met such dedicated, compassionate volunteers who care deeply about the dogs and about doing things the right way."
She especially values the teamwork and shared mission that define the organization.
"The organization and teamwork really stand out to me, and it’s inspiring to work alongside people who share the same mission."
A Rescue Memory That Stands Out
While still newer to DDR, Mikaela has already found inspiration in the dogs she’s helped support.
"I’m especially drawn to following the journeys of the dogs who come into rescue in the roughest shape. Watching their transformations is incredible."
In particular, dogs like Otto and Behr have left a lasting impression.
"Seeing where they start and how much love, medical care, and patience can completely change their lives is amazing."
How Rescue Has Impacted Her
"Volunteering has taught me that rescue is hard work. It’s emotional, time-consuming, and often messy."
Being part of the behind-the-scenes effort has given her a deeper understanding of what rescue truly requires.
"The polished adoption posts don’t always show what these dogs looked like — or what they endured — when they first entered rescue. Being part of the behind-the-scenes effort has given me a much deeper appreciation for the coordination, persistence, and heart that go into every single happy ending."
Life Outside of Rescue
By day, Mikaela works as a data analyst — a role that fits perfectly with her love of organization and problem-solving.
"I love systems, organization, and problem-solving — all things that definitely come in handy in this work."
She also has a special place in her heart for a group of dogs that often get overlooked.
"I have a huge soft spot for black rescue dogs. I have one of my own, and I know how often black dogs are overlooked in shelters and face tougher odds when it comes to adoption."
Her passion for rescue extends far beyond DDR.
"Outside of DDR, I also transport for a local cat rescue and foster for a lab rescue in Colorado, and occasionally foster for a couple other rescues if I see a dog I can’t pass up. Rescue has truly become a big part of my life, and I’m grateful to play even a small role in helping animals find their way home."
Why We’re Grateful
Mikaela brings a unique blend of heart, organization, and dedication to Doodle Dandy Rescue. Whether she’s coordinating placements, helping with transports, or ensuring fosters have the supplies they need, she plays a vital role in keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes!
Her willingness to step in wherever needed and her passion for being part of the solution make a lasting impact on both our dogs and our team. We are so grateful to have her as part of the Doodle Dandy Rescue family!
