VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: MIKAELA ELIZONDO

Volunteer Spotlight, Volunteer, Rescue, Doodle

THE LOGISTICS HEARTBEAT BEHIND THE SCENES

At Doodle Dandy Rescue, some volunteers are the quiet force that keeps everything moving — coordinating details, solving problems, and ensuring every dog gets where they need to be safely and efficiently. Mikaela Elizondo is one of those incredible behind-the-scenes heroes.

Mikaela joined Doodle Dandy Rescue in December 2025 and quickly became an important part of the Houston team: "I’m part of the Houston Foster Placement Team, and I also help with transports and supplies. I really enjoy being involved in the logistical side of things — helping make sure dogs get where they need to be and that fosters are set up for success."

From coordinating placements to helping organize supplies and stepping up for transports, Mikaela plays a vital role in making sure both dogs and fosters are supported every step of the way.

Her heart for rescue didn’t begin with DDR — it started with her own dog. "My own dog is a rescue, so animal rescue has always been close to my heart." She continues to foster and volunteer across multiple organizations, but DDR stood out for a special reason. "I joined DDR because I loved the idea of having a specific role and contributing to the behind-the-scenes work that keeps everything moving. The stray problem in Texas is heartbreaking. I know I can’t solve it alone, but I love being a small piece of the solution and helping however I can."

That perspective — understanding that every small effort contributes to a bigger mission — is what makes Mikaela such a powerful part of the rescue village.

For her, the people make all the difference. "What I enjoy most about volunteering with DDR is the people. I’ve met such dedicated, compassionate volunteers who care deeply about the dogs and about doing things the right way. The organization and teamwork really stand out to me, and it’s inspiring to work alongside people who share the same mission."

Although she’s still newer to DDR, she’s already witnessed the transformations that make rescue so meaningful. "I’m especially drawn to following the journeys of the dogs who come into rescue in the roughest shape. Watching their transformations is incredible. In Houston, dogs like Otto and Behr have been particularly meaningful to follow — seeing where they start and how much love, medical care, and patience can completely change their lives is amazing."

Like many volunteers, Mikaela has gained a deeper understanding of what rescue truly entails. "Volunteering has taught me that rescue is hard work. It’s emotional, time-consuming, and often messy. The polished adoption posts don’t always show what these dogs looked like — or what they endured — when they first entered rescue. Being part of the behind-the-scenes effort has given me a much deeper appreciation for the coordination, persistence, and heart that go into every single happy ending."

By day, Mikaela works as a data analyst — a skillset that blends seamlessly into her volunteer work. "I love systems, organization, and problem-solving — all things that definitely come in handy in this work." That operational mindset helps keep foster placements, supplies, and transports running smoothly.

She also has a special place in her heart for a particular group of dogs. "I have a huge soft spot for black rescue dogs. I have one of my own, and I know how often black dogs are overlooked in shelters and face tougher odds when it comes to adoption. Because of that, they’ll always hold a special place in my heart."

And her dedication doesn’t stop with DDR. "Outside of DDR, I also transport for a local cat rescue and foster for a lab rescue in Colorado, and occasionally foster for a couple other rescues if I see a dog I can’t pass up. Rescue has truly become a big part of my life, and I’m grateful to play even a small role in helping animals find their way home."

Mikaela, thank you for being a steady, compassionate, and detail-oriented force behind the scenes. Your logistical mind, generous heart, and commitment to being part of the solution help make every successful placement possible. We are so grateful to have you as part of the Doodle Dandy Rescue family!
