VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: JILL WILSON

Volunteer, doodle, rescue.

Jill Wilson’s journey with Doodle Dandy Rescue began with one doodle, one leap of faith, and one very memorable windshield incident. Since then, she has become a cornerstone of the Houston volunteer community — compassionate, reliable, and always ready to open her home and heart to a dog in need.

How Jill Joined the DDR Family

Jill began volunteering with Doodle Dandy Rescue in October 2024, signing up to foster without much prior rescue experience. Her first foster, Rue, didn’t just introduce her to the rescue world — she became part of Jill’s family. After Rue’s adoption (and joyful foster fail!), Jill was invited to explore additional roles, and she dove in wholeheartedly.

Today, Jill has served in a wide range of positions, including:

  • Intake

  • Foster Mentor

  • Transport

  • Photography

  • Ongoing fostering

Most recently, she stepped into the role of Intake Lead for the Houston Region, helping guide dogs safely into rescue and supporting the volunteers who make that possible.

 Why Rescue Matters to Her

Jill’s inspiration is simple: she loves dogs and wanted to help in a meaningful way. After exploring different shelters and rescues, she found that DDR’s responsiveness — paired with her love of doodles — made it the perfect fit.

What She Loves Most About DDR

For Jill, the heart of DDR is the team environment. Rescue work can be emotional and unpredictable, but she never feels alone.

She values:

  • The encouragement volunteers give one another

  • The friendships formed at DDR events

  • The joy of working together to save doodles

And of course… all the doodles themselves!

A Rescue Memory She’ll Never Forget

Rue, her first foster, gave Jill a story she’ll be telling for years.

On the day Jill signed Rue’s adoption contract, Rue decided to show just how much she loved car rides. She zoomed past Jill, leapt into the front seat… and straight into the windshield, shattering it.

Rue was perfectly fine. The windshield? Not so much.

Jill laughs about it now: “We still love her immensely — we just don’t open the front car door first anymore!”

A Moment That Made Her Smile

One of Jill’s fosters had a habit of barking at her husband and son every time they entered the room. She warned the potential adopters repeatedly that he would absolutely bark at them when they arrived.

They walked in.

He walked up.

Tail wagging.

Not a single bark.

Jill knew instantly: he had found his people.

How Rescue Has Changed Her

Volunteering has taught Jill more about dog behavior and training than she ever expected. She’s gained knowledge, confidence, and a deeper understanding of what dogs need to thrive.

Letting fosters go is always bittersweet, but seeing them flourish in their forever homes fills her with pride. Many adopters stay in touch, and she loves watching “her” pups grow into the lives they were meant for.

 Life Outside of Rescue

Jill’s world revolves around family and dogs. She is:

  • The youngest of eight siblings

  • Married for 14 years to her biggest supporter — the man who always says “yes” when DDR calls

  • A mom to 5 kids and 6 grandkids

  • A dog mom to 3 beloved fur children

Outside of rescue, Jill channels her love of nurturing into her career as a photographer, capturing newborns and young families in their sweetest moments.

 Why We’re Grateful

Jill brings warmth, humor, leadership, and unwavering dedication to Doodle Dandy Rescue. From intake to mentoring to fostering, she shows up with a full heart and a willingness to help wherever she’s needed.

Her story is a reminder that rescue isn’t just about saving dogs — it’s about the people who open their homes, their time, and their hearts to make a difference!!
