Here at Doodle Dandy, we sometimes take in dogs that are in their golden years. And while everyone falls for the cute puppy, our older dogs want you to know they’re pretty great too!

Top reasons you should consider an older dog:
Less supervision and exercise needs
Seasoned dogs generally don’t need watching every minute like a puppy would. They’re usually not interested in chewing up your shoes or digging up the new landscaping. Most older dogs have learned good house behavior and are content to chill somewhere near you until it’s mealtime. They’re also generally satisfied with a short walk or romp around the yard—no daily 5Ks required.
Calmer temperaments & more training
Mature dogs tend to be calmer. They’ve been there, done that, and they know the score. This often translates to more patience with children, easier vet visits, and better manners. Your adopted senior dog may already have all the skills you’d have to spend time teaching a younger dog.
Old dogs can learn new tricks
The old adage isn’t true—in rescue, we see it all the time: dogs of all ages can learn! We’ve had older un-potty trained dogs learn to be potty pros with help from their fosters. Most dogs want to please and can learn anything you want with consistency and patience.
Older dogs are appreciative
Senior dogs know the comforts of home and really appreciate their people. They may not have as many years ahead of them, but time and again, we see them bond strongly with their people and give 100% of their love and devotion.
Older dogs have lower adoption fees
We set our adoption fees based on the age/breed mix of our dogs. That means when you adopt an older dog, you get all the benefits above at a lower cost!
And one reality to keep in mind: continuing health needs
While we think senior dogs are great, a reality to keep in mind is that they may have more health needs as they age. But even these can be a positive. For example, a dog losing their hearing probably won’t bark at the delivery person and annoy your neighbors!
