Does your doodle lick their paws, scratch constantly, or get frequent ear infections? You’re not alone! Many doodles struggle with allergies — and while they’re known for their soft coats and happy-go-lucky personalities, their sensitive skin can sometimes need a little extra TLC. Let’s take a closer look at what causes allergies in doodles, how to spot the signs, and what you can do to help your pup feel their best.

Common Signs of Allergies in Dogs

Allergies can look different from one dog to another, but some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Itchy skin, paws, or ears

  • Licking or chewing at their feet

  • Red or irritated skin (especially around the belly or armpits)

  • Frequent ear infections or head shaking

  • Watery eyes, sneezing, or scooting

If your doodle is showing any of these signs, it’s a good idea to schedule a vet visit. Allergies rarely go away on their own, and your vet can help find the root cause and recommend a treatment plan.

Common Causes of Allergies in Doodles

Doodles can have allergies for several reasons — sometimes even a combination of them!

  • Environmental Allergies: These are caused by pollen, grass, mold, or dust. Bathing your doodle regularly with a gentle, hypoallergenic shampoo and wiping their paws after walks can help minimize exposure.

  • Food Allergies: Some doodles react to specific proteins or ingredients like chicken, beef, wheat, or dairy. Your vet might suggest an elimination diet or special food to pinpoint what’s bothering your pup.

  • Flea or Insect Allergies: Even a single flea bite can trigger a major reaction for sensitive dogs. Keeping your doodle on year-round flea prevention is one of the easiest ways to avoid flare-ups.

Pro tip: Omega-3 fatty acids (often found in fish oil supplements) can help reduce inflammation and keep your doodle’s coat shiny and skin healthy!

Treating and Managing Allergies

While allergies can’t always be cured, they can definitely be managed. Your vet may recommend:

  • Prescription allergy medication or shots

  • Medicated shampoos or wipes

  • Specialized diets or supplements

  • Regular grooming and ear cleaning

  • Consistency is key — with the right care routine, most doodles live very comfortably even with allergies.
